Lunchtime at Dordon

Celebrating Lunchtime at Dordon

As we have started the new school year, we have already begun to notice some really positive changes in the way our children interact with one another at lunchtime.

Lunchtime is such an important part of the school day. It is a time when children have the opportunity to relax, play, socialise and develop those all- important friendships and social skills. As I have been observing our children during lunchtime, I have been particularly pleased to see the growing kindness, respect and care they are showing towards each other.

One of the things that has really stood out is the way our older children are looking after and supporting our younger pupils. We are seeing children offering a helping hand, including others in their games and showing patience and care towards one another. These small moments can make a huge difference to another child’s day.

Our children have also been fabulous at taking responsibility for their environment. They are becoming much better at tidying away playground equipment and keeping our different play zones organised. This shows a growing sense of pride in our school and an understanding that we all have a part to play in looking after the spaces we share.

Another really encouraging development has been the way children are showing kindness and respect towards each other. Of course, lunchtime is never perfect — and we all know that children can be wonderfully unpredictable! There will always be disagreements, frustrations and moments when things don't quite go to plan. What is important is how children respond to these situations.

Increasingly, I am seeing pupils use their words to explain how they feel, seek help from an adult and resolve situations rather than retaliating. This is a really important step in developing emotional maturity and learning how to manage the inevitable challenges that come with friendships and play.

So, to all of our children at Dordon — well done! Keep looking out for each other, keep using kind words, keep showing respect and keep offering that helping hand.
